What is a headshot?

A headshot is a photographic portrait, generally a close up including only the head and shoulders. It is the first impression you will give to others... personal branding for you, your company, or your group.

Who Needs a Headshot?

Pretty much everyone these days. Small business owners, corporations, real estate agents, lawyers, doctors, actors, models and just about everyone who wants a strong business portrait for marketing, web and social media. You should have a new headshot every year. This is your business card. You have the power to dictate your online perception. Your headshot is your logo for your personal brand and should be treated as such.

I have heard the term, "Environmental Portrait." What is an environmental portrait?

An environmental portrait is a workplace image. Think of a basketball player photographed on the hardwood, a CEO in the boardroom, or doctor in an exam room. Environmental portraits are fantastic for editorial purposes, websites, and many other uses.

What should I wear?

You should wear what you think is appropriate for the audience you are wanting to communicate with. What emotion or feeling do you want to portray? Typically, people in finance dress in business formal, but many times, people want to show friendliness and a casual look. Creative types are generally more relaxed and expressive about what they wear. Mild textures are nice. Avoid tweeds, plaids, bold stripes, and complex patterns. Don't wear bulky, shiny, or distracting jewelry in most cases. Also avoid heavy makeup, especially very glossy lipstick. For a typical headshot, you only need to be concerned from the waist-up. For an environmental portrait you want to be ready from head-to-toe.

Do your sessions include hair and makeup services?

Our sessions do not include hair and makeup services. Our clients prefer to arrange this themselves with the people are comfortable with and then come to the session prepared to go.

How do I pose?

We are here to help you feel relaxed and have fun. We'll coach you into a variety of poses and expressions and shoot photos from different angles to make sure we have a lot of great images and options for you to choose from. We will never just put you in front of the camera and expect you to figure it out; that said, if you have something in mind, just let us know and we'll do our best to capture that with our camera!

What facial expressions should I use?

You will likely want to look professional, but that doesn’t mean you can’t crack a smile or even laugh now and then. We really want you use a natural smile. The more variety you have in your expressions, the more choices you will have later. A more serious headshot may be suitable for a job application, while an image that is a little more casual may look better for social media or your blog.

I feel nervous and uncomfortable in front of the camera. What should I do?

We will do everything we can to help you feel at ease. That said, listening to music or calm deep breathing exercises may help before the session. Seriously, just relax and be calm, it's just a camera!

I wear glasses. will that be a problem?

Typically, this is not a problem with us. We can usually work around glare and reflections using proper angles with our lights and a little bit of reflection is normal as long as it is not distracting. However sometimes people have glasses with challenging anti-reflective or “computer” glasses…and we might have to pull off retouching miracles, which we will do.

What if I'm not photogenic?

You are your own worst critic. Feel free to let us know if you have a favorite side or something that bugs you. We will do our best to make sure you look your best!

Do you have a variety of backgrounds and lighting options available?

You do get to choose your backdrop(s)! Keep in mind that you backdrop should serve your purpose (match others on your website or fit your business card) but, generally speaking, the best headshots have little to nothing to do with the color or type of background and everything to do with the energy you are giving to the camera!

Do you offer physical prints?

Physical prints are available for an additional fee. Additional processing time is required to print your images and we have a wide variety of printing options available.

Why do I have to sign a Model Release?

It protects both you and the photographer by stating clearly where and how the images may be used.

How do I pay?

We invoice online and all major credit and debit cards or bank transfers are accepted.  We don't accept personal checks or payment at the session.

When do session fees need to be paid?

All session fees need to be paid in full a minimum of 24-hours prior to the session. All session fees are invoiced and paid online via credit/debit card or bank transfer.
